Ocean Conservancy strives for ocean justice. Their motto is ”A healthier ocean protected by a more just world.” I designed specifically to fight against plastic pollution as it is one of the biggest detriments to the ocean’s ecosystem.

When speaking about littering and plastic pollution, people tend to dismiss it or believe its someone else’s job/issue. To catch people’s attention each piece is paired with its own cheeky undertone.

The entire series is designed to look inflated like a balloon, due to being a big plastic perpetrator. Choking and starving many birds. Then the choice of a darker blue, is to represent a murkier water, implying poor health.

Concept

The purpose of the ad campaigns was relate the viewers to the animals that are effected by plastic pollution. Having the fish be hooked by a plastic straw is to show human’s direct impact to the animals. Paired with being able to see through the fish and it has consumed plastic.

AT THE SHALLOW END OF THE GENE POOL

Researchers have found microplastics within human DNA. They cause DNA damage, and is a known risks for cancer development. It has even been found in human breast milk and an infant's first stool.

The DNA strands are created from plastic straw to show how humans and fish are in a similar and connected. That we may be dead like them as well.

“At the shallow end of the gene pool” is an out right insult on ones intelligence if they actively contribute to plastic pollution. Gene pool is a connection to DNA and a small body of water.

CAN YOU TASTE THE DIFFERENCE?

I wanted to show case the fact that, 60% of fish that were examined globally contained microplastics. Sushi, a delicacy that is iconic and enjoyed by many across the globe. Using an easily recognizable and well loved food resonates with people more.

“Can you taste the difference?” is a question wondering if people would even notice they are eating plastic.
